Owego will soon see major improvements to its sewer system, as more than $660,000 in federal funds is being given for repairs. The money comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance Grant program. The town will use these funds to repair Main Street Pump House #4, which supplies drinking water to approximately 1,700 homes in Apalachin. The pump house became inoperable after the September 2011 flooding during Tropical Storm Lee. In 2012, FEMA originally offered around 250,000 for sewer repairs, but the town deemed that amount insufficient for the work that needed to be done. The total project cost is around $883,000. The FEMA funding will cover 75 percent of the cost.
