Owego Firefighters responded to one of the first brush fires of the year yesterday afternoon on Route 38 near McLean Road. What was initially reported as a 40 by 60 foot grass fire ended up in a response from 6 departments. The fire was located several hundred feet off the road, and could only be accessed by ATV’s and UTV’s. Manpower was also limited because of the day and time of call, when most volunteers are at work. Owego called firefighters and brush trucks from Weltonville, Newark Valley, Candor, Campville, Apalachin and Southside. Tioga Center was put on standby to cover those districts in the event of another call. The fire was contained and extinguished within a couple of hours. No one was injured, and no structures were compromised.
