A fire that took place early Tuesday morning in Newark Valley has destroyed a barn and the homeowner’s pickup truck. Just before 7 o’clock, a call came in for a working barn fire at 9884 Route 38 just north of the village. Fire crews had to use an emergency access road to reach the barn due to bridge construction on Route 38. It was construction workers who first saw smoke and alerted the homeowners. In addition to destroying the barn and truck, the fire also partially burned two nearby tool sheds. Multiple fire departments responded to the scene, including Berkshire, Richford, Owego, Union Center, West Corners, and Maine. The cause of the fire was spontaneous ignition of hay.
