The fire that caused an injury to a firefighter in Binghamton over the weekend was caused by smoking. On Saturday, a fire took place at a two-family home on Eldredge Street, after a cigarette reportedly caused a mattress to catch fire. A resident of the home then tried to drag the mattress outside, which caused the fire to spread throughout the building. The family that lives on the other side of the apartment at 121 Eldredge Street tried to escape, as a grandmother dropped her grandchild and another person from the second-story window to safety. She then tried to escape from the window herself and suffered burns to her legs. When Binghamton Fire crews first arrived on the scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames which had spread to the front of both apartments. While fighting the fire, the roof of the building collapsed, resulting in the injury of a firefighter. He was treated at the hospital and released with minor injuries.
