The most recent polls in New York State show a growth in support for the amendment to the state constitution to expand casino gambling. Proposition #1, which voters will be able to vote on next month, will determine whether or not non-Indian-owned, Las Vegas-style casinos will be allowed in New York. Siena College released the results of a poll Monday which found 56 percent of their respondents said they would be in favor of the change to the constitution. The poll was conducted by telephone to 822 registered voters. The possible amendment is seeing some opposition in the state, with critics saying the wording of the ballot crosses into advocacy because it promises jobs, more school aid, and lower taxes, without mentioning any negative impacts. Tioga Downs in Nichols is a strong contender to be granted a license to become a full casino if the proposition is passed, and owner Jeff Gural says the proposition’s job creation wouldn’t be limited to just casino workers.
Voting for the proposition will take place on Tuesday, November 5th.
