The Village of Owego has been cited by the Public Employee Safety and Health Office, which is New York State’s version of OSHA. Owego Village Mayor Kevin Millar announced this morning that the Owego Fire Department was cited for 6 violations found during a recent investigation. Millar says that over the past several months, the Owego Fire Department leadership has been working to address these alleged deficiencies as rapidly as possible and ensure the safety of firefighters. The procedures that are instituted by local, state and federal agencies are designed to maximize the safety of firefighters. The mayor did not expand on what the 6 violations were but said the department must adhere to the regulations set forth by the state to maintain a safe work environment for all of the departments volunteers. Since its creation in 1862, the Village of Owego Fire Department has suffered several tragedies. Millar says the Owego Fire Department has resolved to learn from these tragedies, is strengthening training, and leadership skills to maximize the safety of firefighters.
