New employees of the City of Binghamton may be required to move inside the city limits if they want a job. City leaders are looking to pass legislation to require new employees to live in the city as a way to help with Binghamton’s dwindling population. The city once had over 85,000 residents, but that number is now closer to 50,000. The new rules would not apply to current workers. Officials are also hoping that if responsible homeowners move into the city and take care of their properties, it will cut down on blight in the city. City council hopes to get the legislation finalized over the next four to five weeks.
