The new dog park at Hickories Park in Owego will be here this summer. Current plans have the park taking up a three-acre plot of land at Hickories, and at a town board workshop on Wednesday, officials say the park could be open as early as late July. The Owego Dog Owners Group presented plans for the park, which include separate fenced-in areas for large and small dogs, along with a storage facility for supplies, and watering stations. The small dog area would take up about a half-acre, with the large dog area being closer to two acres. There are also plans for a central fenced-in area between the two that would have agility training for both large and small dogs. A proposed date of April 18th is set for the Owego Dog Owners Group and town officials to work out details about the park’s design and other issues, and a final meeting to approve the park’s plan could come on May 6th. The town board unanimously approved the dog park back in September. Upstate Shredding owner Adam Weitsman has offered to donate $150,000 to cover the cost of building the dog park. The park will be named after Weitsman’s sister, Rebecca, a dog lover who passed away from cancer back in 2001.
