The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is joining a number of other local law enforcement agencies with their partnership with Vested Interest in K-9’s, an organization that distributes bullet- and stab-proof vests to police dogs across the country. Three vests were purchased by the sheriff’s office to protect their dogs. Each vest costs just under $1,000. The vests offer protection of vital organs and can also provide coverage to prevent debris from hitting dogs during a chase. The Johnson City and Binghamton Police Departments currently utilize five vests for their police dogs.
