Former New York State Senator Tom Libous has lost his battle with prostate cancer.  Former staff member Emmanuel Priest said Libous passed away Tuesday evening surrounded by family and friends.

Current state Senator Fred Akshar, who won a special election last fall to fill Libous’ seat following the Binghamton resident’s fall from political grace, said he cherished his time with Libous who left a permanent, positive impact on the Southern Tier. Others across the state also remembered Libous, including Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan who said the Johnson City native was a “larger than life” figure with a “common man’s touch.”

Libous knew how to play the political game, ascending from one of many senators in Albany to deputy majority leader .. a position that give him power and influence at the state level. He had battled cancer, on and off, since 2009. State Senator Thomas W. Libous was 63. Funeral arrangements are pending.
