Broome County has announced a hiring freeze for all non-essential county positions and asked the state for a full audit of their finances. The moves come as new County Executive Jason Garnar says he is concerned with the county’s current financial status. He says their fund balance has dropped more than a million dollars in one fiscal year. He wants to take a closer look at how the county spends its money, and where savings can be made. Garnar says they have already merged four jobs into two, saving Broome $200,000 per year.
