Tioga County has received what is called a Land Bank designation … one of only 20 across New York State. Tioga County Economic Development and Planning has formed the necessary nonprofit organization that will take a look at what can be done at vacant, abandoned, blighted and tax delinquent properties. The idea is to find ways to reuse the property through renovation or demolition. After improvements to these rundown properties, the land could be purchased and used for new business or other development, put the property back on the tax roll and encourage others in the area to help improve neighborhood through Tioga County. These land banks have access to state money not available to others for redevelopment. Other land banks in the Southern Tier Land Banks are located in Broome, Chemung and Steuben counties.
