A Christmas tradition in the Valley has come to an end.
The Valley Christmas Tournament, which dates back to the 1960s, has been officially retired.
Tournament chairman Denny Thomas made the announcement on Tuesday evening.
Thomas helped bring back the tournament about a decade ago after a four-year hiatus. Since then, the tournament committee has donated $22,000 to charities and another $21,000 to participating teams.
With the tournament coming to an end, Thomas announced that the committee will be giving out another $13,000 to local charities and Valley basketball programs.
UNICO and CHOP will receive $2,500, while Penn-York Opportunities and the Valley Color Guard will also receive $1,000 donations. The Athens, Sayre and Waverly boys and girls basketball programs will also receive $1,000 each.
UNICO will host a UNICO Classic on Saturday, Dec. 20. This year’s event will feature a girls game between Waverly and Windsor followed by a boys contest between Athens and Waverly.
Athens will also be hosting their own holiday tournament this year during the week between Christmas and New Year’s.
