Broome County’s Medical Reserve Corps is seeking volunteers to help the community prepare for public-health emergencies and respond when they occur. The program welcomes people with medical backgrounds and residents who can contribute other skills.
The county Health Department describes the corps as a group of citizen volunteers who donate their time and abilities to improve local health and safety. Its emergency-preparedness webpage provides a registration link for people interested in joining.
Corps activities can include emergency-response training and exercises, emergency shelter operations and medical care, and support when health systems need extra capacity. Volunteers may also help with mass dispensing of emergency medications.
The county lists disease testing and surveillance, community vaccine clinics, and public education and outreach among the other activities members can support. The program offers residents a way to prepare for emergency work before a response is needed.
Medical credentials are not a requirement for every volunteer role. The county specifically includes people with nonmedical backgrounds in its recruitment information, alongside those who bring healthcare experience.
Residents seeking more information can call 607-778-2898 or email [email protected]. Registration information is available through the Medical Reserve Corps section of the county’s emergency-preparedness webpage.
