A local father has been arrested after his 23-month-old child was found wandering alone on Upper Front Street in Binghamton. The child was found near The Spot restaurant on Monday. Residents told the sheriff’s office that the child was carrying a toy ball and a set of keys, which deputies then used to try to contact the child’s family. A phone number on the keys led police to the child’s grandparent in Chenango Bridge, who then provided the name and address of the boy’s father, 26-year-old Mark Grant of Binghamton. Grant was reportedly asleep at the time of the incident and unaware the child had been wandering alone for close to an hour. The mother of the child was at work and also unaware of the situation. Grant was arrested and taken into custody on charges of endangering the welfare of a child. He was released after being arraigned in the Town of Chenango Court. A report was filed with Child Protective Services and the child was turned over to his mother.
