U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Tuesday that the Greater Binghamton Airport will be the recipient of a grant totaling more than $1.1 million. The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation and will be used to rehabilitate the west apron at the airport. The west apron is separate from the runways and taxiways at Binghamton, and is used as the area where aircraft are loaded, unloaded, boarded, parked, and refueled. The improvements will likely increase the efficiency at the airport, allowing for faster refueling and more flights. The funding for the Greater Binghamton Airport is part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, which provides grants to public agencies for planning and development of public-use airports.
