Lockheed Martin has announced that the company will be cutting approximately 600 positions in the United States across its Mission Systems and Training business, which includes the facility in Owego. Employees affected by the cuts will be notified by November 6th. At this time, officials for Lockheed say they are unable to specify the impact on any individual location for the company. Lockheed Martin in Owego manages electronic systems, mission systems and sensors, and ship and aviation systems, and currently has 2,675 employees. This past August, the company served layoff notices to 367 employees nationwide, including 25 in Owego. That round of layoffs, along with this current round of layoffs, comes after the company faces uncertain program funding, delays in contract awards, and a competitive defense market. Lockheed says that while they were affected by the government shutdown, it had no impact on the impending layoffs.
