The latest word from officials at Wagner Lumber in Owego is that the lumber yard is still able to dry wood for sale at its site, but the sawmill portion of the company will be transferred to other sawmills while the Owego yard rebuilds. About 35 workers are employed at the sawmill, which caught fire at the center of the 53,000 square foot facility on Sunday morning. It’s estimated to be another six to nine months before Wagner is able to open a new sawmill. The cause of Sunday’s fire is still under investigation, but at this time there is speculation of equipment malfunctioning inside the sawmill.
